Fossils in Diatomite
The chalk-white cliff at Malaga Cove, Palos Verdes Peninsula, is a sedimentary formation laid down beneath the sea at least 10,000 years ago, before PV rose up and became an island. The crumbly material making up the cliff is diatomaceous earth, or diatomite. It is composed of the fossil remains of silaceous microfossils: diatoms, radiolarians, silicoflagellates and sponge spicules.
