Filamentous bacteria inhabit sulfur vent
At Torrance Reef, small gas bubbles rhythmically escape from hydrothermal vents in the sea floor. Inorganic chemicals emanating from these vents support the growth of microbial mat communities, which may be made up of sulfur-cycling bacteria. Several strains of filamentous bacteria were shown to be important contributors to the mat community and give the vents a flowing white beard.
