Penares saccharis or perhaps Penares cortius
A member of Demosponges (Class Demospongiae)
ID thanks to Tom Turner, Associate Professor in the Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology department at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
"Small & scattered oscula, dark color, not inhabited by barnacles: probably not S. confoederata. Also, all the S. confoederata I have found thus far that are small-medium sized are covered in porous disks, a la this observation: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/26703131. This looks just like the Penares saccharis I have found at the channel islands. It could also be Penares cortius, which I have not yet found."
